Viktor Stepanovich Kosenko. Born 1896 St Petersburg; died 1938 Kyiv. Ukrainian composer, pianist and pedagogue. Graduated 1918 from the St Petersburg Conservatoire where he studied piano and composition with N. Tcherepnine, Glazunov, Steinberg and Sokolov. He taught piano and music theory at the Music Techicum in Zhitomir and concertized extensively with a chamber ensemble. From 1929-34 taught at the Lysenko Music and Drama Institute in Kyiv and then later from 1934-38 at the Kyiv Conservatoire [students included Chaikin and Sandler]. He became a professor in 1932. As a composer he was influenced by Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Rachmaninov and Schumann, and his piano and chamber music earned him an international reputation. Personally I find his music exquisite, well crafted with some beautiful harmonies especially the Op 8 Etudes. After his death a number of his works remained in manuscript, including an unfinished opera ‘Marina’ and his friends Lyatoshinsky and Revutsky prepared these for later publication.
