Composers from Switzerland
Gustav Weber (1845-1887). We know little of Gustav Weber’s life other than that his lack of posthumous recognition is likely the result of his premature death aged forty-one. Born in Switzerland, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatoire and became a professional organist and conductor as well as a composer. Much of his career was spent as a teacher of singing in the Zurich public schools, and towards the end of his life he became editor of the Zurich journal Schweizerische Musikzeitung. Of his piano trio, op 5, Liszt, who was the dedicatee, wrote in 1882 that “I consider [it] an eminent work, worthy of recommendation and performance.”
The Piano Sonata op. 1 occupies a similar coming-of-age role in Weber’s output to say the early sonatas of Brahms. It is clear that Weber had absorbed elements of the “orchestral” piano style, with many passages featuring massive chords and double octave figurations. His melodic material recalls previous B flat Sonatas such as the opp. 106 by both Beethoven, and more particularly, Mendelssohn. Throughout the four movements a high level of invention and creativity is sustained, with the return of the opening motif at the end of the finale marking a satisfying cyclical aspect to the work.

Interesting find, Malc.
I only have his op9 (Fünf Klavierstücke), but in a modern edition which is still under copyright.

Re: Composers from Switzerland
I've already just posted the Six Etudes by Huber on Etudes thread...but just to reiterate his bio: Hans Huber (1852 – 1921), Swiss composer. Born in Eppenberg-Wöschnau (Canton of Solothurn). The son of an amateur musician, Huber became a chorister and showed an early talent for the piano. In 1870 he entered Leipzig Conservatory. In 1877 he returned to Basel to teach, but did not obtain a post in the Conservatory there until 1889; seven years later he became its director. He wrote eight symphonies, several concertos including 4 for piano, and a number of piano works.
And the first amongst the many piano works - En Chasse.

Re: Composers from Switzerland
Johann Karl Eschmann (1826-82). Swiss pianist & teacher. Studied in Leipzig with Moscheles, and also had some lessons with Mendelssohn. He then settled in Zurich as a piano teacher.
I have posted [thank you Mr P]:
Op 25 Rosen und Dormen - which are nine character studies, and two sonatas from the opus 72 set [there is one sonata for each season, but only have Nos 1 &2 and a damaged No. 2, which I've not posted].
