They can be generally be cleaned fairly easily with free software like NAPS2 + Paint.NET
If you PM me the PDFs I can have a look.

Here you have the first volume part I. The file is very big. I have split it in two parts.

These look quite straightforward. The major work of straightening (deskewing) pages and making them monochrome takes < 2 minutes (for a whole volume) in NAPS2. Removing edge junk and sometimes re-centring the content on the page takes a little longer in Paint.NET .

I'll post them back to you when they're done.

Bingo, thanks for dropping those hints about technique. I hadn't played with NAPS2 for a while, and didn't realize its potential.
