This fantasia is well known to most of us as one of the early Bach pieces we learn before diving in head first into the WTC....this nice Fischer edition clarifies the ornaments which used to cause me trouble many decades ago as editions conflicted--and still do--as to their interpretation, but Fischer's realizations are close to what I learned. What caught my eye as something I didn't know: That this was intended to be paired with a fugue, whose very interesting subject is give on page 1.

I would say it is fairly known.
But anyway: your post is a great idea.

A Dutch novelist, Maarten 't Hart, wrote a book about Bach. In the book he says:
"While you're playing Beethoven, you wish you already arrived at the end of the piece.
When you're playing Bach, at the end of a piece you immediately want to play it again."
I fully agree with him.

I often played the melody-line of this 5th prelude with the left hand alone, for practising,
but in the meantime I gave the right hand time to rest.
It will take some practising to let it play the left-hand part along.

Hand crossed! What hilarity! Alfor is having way too much fun. All this in the midst of me relearning the Goldberg's in Paul Barton's version with the notes redistributed between hands. After relearning the 5th variation, I then checked in here to find this! Much fun.

Quite a fascinating piece, this Fantasie, although Bach's authorship is disputed. It was removed from BWV 920 to Anhang II, the doubtful works.
This is from volume 22 of the Busoni edition, which specific volume was edited by Egon Petri.
The complete edition is still available from Breitkopf and, in my opinion, highly recommendable (toghether with an urtext edition, like Baerenreiter).
Maybe Alfor can provide finger settings to play this piece hand crossed.
