The Kricka suite is indeed highly lyrical and very lovely. This is the only other piece we have by this composer, the other being the Loutkova Suite you posted about 3 years ago.

I agree that in a certain period Czechoslovakia was much more „open“ - musically - than the USSR. There is a slight recognisable „air of strangeness“ with many Czech piano music of that period.

In the outer movements the percussive element is prevailing
(harmonically the minor 2nd plays an important role;
last mvt. with reminiscences of a certain Toccata op. 11);
in the middle mvt. „atmosphere“ is created with a minimum of notes.

Yes, the Doubrava Sonata is quite a bit to chew on, that's for sure--heavily percussive and bombastic. Not quite the molto perpetuo of Prokofief's, it seems to flow in bursts of energetic phrases punctuated by massive explanation points. Given time, I'd have a lot of fun re-sworking this for 4 marimbias. This piece is guaranteed to wake anybody up who has not had their first cup of coffee in the morning.

Hello all! Just been away for a while.
Very good to see the Czech pieces. I have many of the original copies, having luckily gone to a second hand shop v soon after someone cleared out a large collection. But Doubrava is a great find. Try his 2nd and 3rd Symphonies -- excellent pieces. One of Suk's last pupils.

Thanks isokani--I'll be keeping a look out for those 2 symphonies. We definitely need to increase or Czech score collections, and a choice morsel like the Alfor supplied sonata certainly wets the appetite for more.
