Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
That was very quick boys, perhaps I was too generous with my clues.
It isalways a problem with foreign names so i just took what was given on the net as a v or a w are very interchangeable and for us a nightmare.
well done to you both
Brian
PS to myself...must be even nastier next time

Yes please!
Meanwhile, here's another set.
Not composers, but pianists with a common factor.
The clues are in a particular order linked to this factor.
1 Right march area 6,8
2 Slash groin cork 7,7
3 Trim skinny amazer 8,9
4 On sad hating 4,4,3
5 Valiant snub sin 9,5
6 - - 0,0
7 - - 0,0
8 I, duly in 5,2
9 Crab hazel calf 5,8
10 A valued naive nay 8,7

Hi Tim,
I think 1965-2010 Chopin Comp.with two blanks at 1990 and 1995 would fit the bill, can't say I have heard of half of them but that as we know is the stupid competition circuit which usually only exposes mediocrity to the public gaze whilst genuine talent is discarded. It is no fun being a genius, nobody likes you.
1. Martha Argerich
2. Garrick Ohlsson
3. Krystian Zimerman
4. Dang Thai Son
5. Stanislav Bunin
6. !
7. !
8. Yundi Li
9. Rafal Blechacz
10. Yulianna Avdeeva

Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
Well done, Brian.
In self-defence, I saw Mark I of the quiz before Tim had edited it by putting in the number of letters for each name. At that point I was well and truly stumped (apart from 1 and 8). I didn't get round to going back to Tim's message, when the additional clues would have helped. The connection to the Chopin competition escaped me; even so, I should certainly have got at least another three.

Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
Thanks chaps for your feedback. I left out the word lengths originally
to add to the challenge, but then realised that that was a bad idea.
Also, I fancied the paradoxical idea of having clues containing no clues,
as in 6 and 7!
Apparently, the last winner of the Chopin Competition was a somewhat
controversial choice.

Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
This is really an open-ended question.
As a big fan of the Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel Op24,
I was wondering if there are any similar works out there (i.e. Brahmsian piano
solo variations on Handelian themes) which anyone could suggest.
My own candidates for this category are as yet just these three:-
Mandyczweski 30 Variations on a Theme of Handel Op5,
Mandyczweski 10 Variations on a Theme of Handel Op6,
Rudolf Niemann Variations on a Theme of Handel Op22.
Fortunately, these works are all available on IMSLP, as is
Moscheles Variations on a Theme of Handel Op29,
although this work is clearly not Brahmsian in style.

Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
Okay chaps, time for another set of you-know-whats!
All you need to do is spot the pairs of composers,
who are often bracketed together for some reason.
1. Had bad channel (4,3,6)
2. Mad, not zany - hard (5,3,6)
3. Drunken lab charmer (8,3,6)
4. Shun madman's branch (6,3,8)
5. Suddenly as brave (7,3,5)
6. Blend not initialized (7,3,9)
7. Vocative hand, spookish fork (9,3,12)
8. Pardon randy farts (5,3,8)
9. Solid chintz pan (6,3,5)
10. Maniacal volcano dangles (8,3,10).

Deleting "and" made this one quite easy. Here are the odd-numbered solutions. Brian, take over.Timtin wrote:Okay chaps, time for another set of you-know-whats!

Very good Jo! I expect you also know the others.
Forgive the slightly impolite setting of No.8, but I couldn't resist including it.

And it involves one of your favourite composers, too! Shame on you.Timtin wrote:Very good Jo! I expect you also know the others.
