Re: Cadenzas
The start of a Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894) cycle from me - hopefully filling some of the gaps on IMSLP and on Pianophilia. The first pieces are a series of cadenzas written by Rubinstein to concertos by Mozart and Beethoven.

Re: Cadenzas
Thank you! You can remove the question mark - it is definitely K 466! Roughly until mid-19th century Mozart was regarded as the creator of only three (!) piano concertos: K 466, K 488 and K 491.
RSL has a good deal of Rubinstein scans, so you might be interested to have a look and compare with your collection.
Although I am admittedly disappointed with the majority of A. Rubinstein's piano works I know, this is a good opportunity to see if I (at least partly) can revise my judgement.

Re: Cadenzas
Alfred, you are a fountain of knowledge. It is certainly news to me that Mozart scholarship only caught up with all his piano concertos until the mid 1900's.... When done reading up on Liszt, I really need to go back to Mozart and acquire more knowledge as this news is a big surprise to me.alfor wrote:Thank you! I am also looking forward to Malc's Rubinstein postings as I have not found much musical value in his compositions, IMHO, anyway, these cadenzas present an interesting start. Thanks Malc for these rather curious cadenzas.

Re: Cadenzas
To my knowledge Carl Reinecke was one of the first pianists who did not only edit and publish the majority of Mozart's Piano Concertos (with his own Cadenzas) but played many of them in public with considerable success. (Even nowadays most pianists focus on merely five concertos: K 271, 466, 488, 491 and 595.)fleubis wrote:...It is certainly news to me that Mozart scholarship only caught up with all his piano concertos until the mid 1900's....
BTW I also assume that in the first part of the 19th century it was extremely rare to have the opportunity to hear a Mozart piano sonata in public!

Re: Cadenzas
Carl Reinecke also produced all 27 Mozart Piano Concertos in 2H format,
published in 4 volumes. I'm lucky enough to have vols.1 & 4 here, but
haven't yet managed to obtain the other two volumes.
I'm not sure I entirely agree about the 5 concertos mentioned being
the ones given the most focus by pianists. Maybe it varies from country
to country, but here no.9 would be below no.21, for example.

Re: Cadenzas
You are certainly right that - although some pianists focus on only 3 or 4 concertos - nowadays we definitely have the opportunity to listen, at least occasional, to all of Mozart's 15 most mature piano concertos.Timtin wrote:Carl Reinecke also produced all 27 Mozart Piano Concertos in 2H format,
