I hope to see in this thread vocal scores, piano solo versions, fantasies, transcriptions etc - all related to the vast subject of operettas, vaudevilles and other (similar) forms of musical comedies...

For a start, my scan of a classical operetta by Millöcker, very well known in Germany and Austria, a humorous persiflage against militarism in the "good old times" (which very often were so far of that) -- but it is really good music IMHO.

'The Yankee Consul' is a comic opera in two acts composed by Alfred G. Robyn (1860 - 1935) , text by Henry Blossom.
Produced by Henry Savage the opera was performed 115 times at the Broadway Theatre in 1904.
Twenty years later the story got filmed by director James W. Horne.

Ivan Caryll is the pen name of Félix Marie Henri Tilkin (1861-1921), a Belgian composer of Musicals who lived and worked in London and later in New York. His first big success was the Musical in two acts "The Shop Girl", first performed in 1894 and described by the author as a 'Musical Farce'. Written by H.J.W. Dam, with Lyrics by Dam and Adrian Ross and some additional numbers by Lionel Monckton and Adrian Ross.

The piece ran for an extremely successful 546 performances in the Gaiety Theatre in London.

And the next Caryll: A Runaway Girl, a Musical Comedy in two acts.
The story was written in 1898 by Seymour Hicks and Harry Nicholls. Additional music by Lionel Monckton (1861-1924) and lyrics by Aubrey Hopwood and Harry Greenbank.

It was produced by George Edwardes at the Gaiety Theatre, London, and ran for a very successful 593 performances in 1898. Broadway Productions in the Daly's Theatre and in the Fifth Avenue Theatre with total 216 performances.

At the turn of the century Ivan Caryll composed The Messenger Boy - a musical comedy in two acts, book by James T. Tanner and Alfred Murray, lyrics by Adrian Ross and Percy Greenbank, with additional numbers by Lionel Monckton and Paul Rubens.

Produced by George Edwardes (1855-1915) it ran for a very successful 429 performances at the Gaietry Theatre located on Aldwych at the eastern end of the Strand. The young ladies appearing in George Edwardes' shows became so popular in London that wealthy gentlemen, termed "Stage Door Johnnies", would wait outside the stage door hoping to escort them to dinner or elsewhere. With just 128 performances in the Daly's Theatre the piece was not such a big success in the US.

Here some melodies from an operetta (likewise unknown to me) by Millöcker - in fact apart from his 2 famous operettas (Der Bettelstudent and Gasparone) almost nothing is known.

Next Caryll: The Toreador - a musical comedy in two acts by James T. Tanner and Harry Nicholls, with lyrics by Adrian Ross and Percy Greenbank and music by Ivan Caryll and Lionel Monckton. It opened at the Gaiety Theatre in London, managed by George Edwardes, on 17 June 1901 and ran for an extremely successful 675 performances. 121 performances at the Knickerbocker Theatre (Broadway) and an unknown numbers of performances at the Academy of Music (Irving Plave, NY).

The Orchid is a musical play in two acts by James T. Tanner, with lyrics by Adrian Ross and Percy Greenbank and music by Ivan Caryll and Lionel Monckton and additional numbers by Paul Rubens. It opened at Gaiety Theatre in London on 26 October 1903 and ran for 559 performances.
Followed by Broadway productions at the Herald Square Theatre, at the Casino Theatre and at the Academy of Music with total 194 performances in 1907 & 1908.

In 1903 another work by Caryll premiered in London: The Duchess of Dantzic.
A light opera in three acts, set in Paris, with a book and lyrics by Henry Hamilton, based on the play Madame Sans-Gêne by Victorien Sardou and Emile Moreau.

The opera was first produced in London at the Lyric Theatre in 1903 and ran for 236 performances. The first New York production at Daly's Theatre ran from 16 January 1905 to 15 April 1905 for a total of 93 performances. Although the piece met with success, it was not the kind of blockbuster hit that the above-posted musical comedies were.
