This opening gambit was itself a clue to the theme, by dint
of the word 'we'.

It was a quiz where I had to tread very carefully indeed,
and the choice of 'victims' was highly significant.

Various anagrams presented themselves, but it
seemed politic to opt for the most anodyne available.

I came across this today. Any ideas what it's about?

Gaddafi, I assume, pronounced the English way.

Correct! Apart from the main notes spelling 'Gaddaf', the eye represents 'i'.
The filename is his initials.
Why didn't he go quietly, like the Tunisian guy?
By not doing so, like Saddam, his demise was an absolute 'sirte'.
