Alberto Jonás (1868, Madrid – 1943, Philadelphia) was a Spanish pianist, composer, and piano pedagogue. Although not much is known about his life, as a pianist he was regarded as a virtuoso on the level of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Moriz Rosenthal, Leopold Godowsky, Józef Hofmann, and Josef Lhévinne. He also ranked, during the 1920s and 30s, amongst the greatest and most sought-after keyboard pedagogues of the time.

Good biographical information on Wikipedia.

Something finger twisting for the weekend......his Op 14 Toccata.

Something of his abilities as a pianist and expectations of his pupils may be gleaned from the comments in the preface to his Schirmer edition of the Henselt Op. 2 studies, in which he makes light of the difficulties of some of these pieces.

Could anyone please post Concierto sin Orquesta, Op.88, Turina's Sonata Fantasia Op. 59 and Rincon Magico (Desfile en Forme de Sonata) Op. 97? They are both blocked on the IMSLP now. Thank you!

Best,
Koon

Jose Antonio de Donastia (1886-1956). Basque composer. His full name was Jose Antonio Zulaica y Arregui but he change this when he took up holy orders. He studied at the Capuchin College in Lecaroz and at the age of 16 entered the Franciscan Order and was ordained a priest. He studied organ and violin with various teachers, and composition with Eugene Cools in Paris. He lived many years in France where he met Ravel; he also travelled to South America and was compelled to leave Spain during its civil war from 1936-39. He was one of the founders of the Instituto Espanol de Musicologia; and a corresponding member of the Academia de Bellas Artes in Madrid. His main accomplishment was the collection of more than 1000 Basque folksongs some of which were the basis for his Preludes Basque for piano. He also composed many motets and scared choruses, and the Itinerarium mysticum for organ.

I have posted the first two volumes of his Basque Preludes [Vol. 3 & 4 to follow].

Mein Gott, wherever do you find these things? So very interesting to me. Is that that Basque title on the left? It looks almost Greek!

The Basque Preludes have all been recorded by Jordi Maso on a Naxos disc No.8.557228.
Padre Jose Antonio Donostia is the name on the disc for the composer.
When I scanned them I used that name rather than what was written on the music.

I will be scanning the rest of these, but so far my searches in my collection have had no luck, and yes I do have a huge collection.
Watch this space is all I can say right now.

There......I let you out of your cell for 10 minutes and already you're waxing on lyrical upon my website..........so back to your Tower and get back to that scanner....there are still thousands of scores to scan and you don't have time to chat.

Thank you Fleubis for treating Mr P kindly [I de-knighted him as was getting too big for his boots....not that those rags on his feet can be called boots but you get my drift]......but too much kindness will make him soft for the long and unending hours he has to put in on the scanner. Maybe I can get Boris and Igor to toughen him up a bit....hmmm.....I'll ponder on that
