This nice collection of accessible pieces and transcriptions by Shostakovich has been circulating for a while. I gave the file a quick once-over, straightening pages, cropping and generally cleaning things up.

Some of the later pieces in this album have big leaps for the left
hand to cope with - not easy for children, or indeed adults.
To me, the title seems slightly ambiguous - is it the children or
the pieces that have been selected?

While we're looking at children's works, here's another interesting volume, courtesy of Relative (I'm just the translator and link finder). While these pieces are certainly very far from master works, I always enjoy these volumes inasmuch as they introduce me to all sorts of composers from the tons of different regions in the former Soviet territory. For the most part, I'd not heard of these composers, though we've previously seen both piano and string quartet pieces by Yury Irdyneev:

Also courtesy of Relative, here's a children's album from one of Tajikistan's more famous opera/song composers. Bio at:

A search for "Rudaki" on Youtube will turn up a complete video of that opera that was recorded off of a television at some point. Aside from that and this, I've not been able to find any scores or recordings by this composer, save for a few operatic excerpts in the 'Aini va Musiqi' volume that I linked in the Central Asian vocal music thread:

My thanks for the translations as well. It is indeed useful to know what one is playing--I find it interesting that the Lullaby from this collection appears in a G. Schirmer collection currently circulating with the title "Elegy." That certainly would impart a different feel to the piece for me.

Does anybody know if the Kompozitor publishing house has any distribution in Western countries? Has anyone ever tried ordering anything from them? I ask because I've had very mixed luck ordering items from Russia, Ukraine, etc... I'm interested in picking up Tolib Shakhidi's piano music, which I think is sold in one 130+ page volume by that publisher.
