One of our beloved moderators has put this post in this thread. That's OK, but no word up to now here about the sad news: "Alicia de Larrocha, Pianist, Dies at 86". I met her after one of her solo recitals in Germany, ca. 20 years ago. I was the only person to congratulate her, she was very friendly and signed me some of my vinyl treasures, among them "The Catalan Piano Tradition": Alicia De Larrocha, Enrique Granados, Frank Marshall, Isaac Albéniz, Joaquin Malats (now on a VAI CD). Thanks to her for introducing so many of us in the wide, wide world of Spanish (etc.) piano music, and so masterly!

I met her too during a lunch-interview with other colleaugues and she was very polite with us and with her friends pianists. Among the many recitals I heard from them, the best piece I remember is not from her spanish repertoire, but .... Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses : the precision and crystal-like shape of her sound. The piano world has lost a very important musician and performer.

I heard Ms. de Larrocha in that same Mendelssohn composition, and it was the high point of the concert. I didn't care for her as much in the really BIG works by non-Spaniards (i.e. Rachmaninov 3, Liszt Sonata, Schumann Carnival), but that is in no way meant to single her out. I always felt other pianists were more to my taste in that repertoire.

The logic in keeping them together in one place is fairly obvious. As time goes by they would otherwise be spread all over the place. This can be our shrine to the artists we've admired and loved, and where we can pay our respects.

My favourite piece of Spanishry is Manuel de Falla's Fantasia Baetica, and Alicia's recording of it is amongst my earliest CD purchases and one of the most played. I never tire of her crystalline precision and passion in this amazing work. R.I.P.

LOL, rob, the 'new' board is so incredibly well organized, I should have been more careful.

Falla's Fantasia Baetica is a wonderful piece of music, and actually I could contribute a lot cleaner scan. (I never tried to learn the piece, yet Alicia's recording was always supreme.)
