Algernon Ashton (1859-1937). His family moved the Leipzig and he studied at the conservatoire with Reinecke and Jadassohn (1875-79); later he took further studies with Raff in Frankfurt (1880). Returning to England he obtained a post as piano tutor at the Royal College of Music where he remained from 1885 to 1910. He was a prolific composer with more than 160 opus numbers.....his music reflecting a conventional Germanic style. Works include 5 symphonies, 3 overtures, a piano concerto, a violin concerto, a number of quintets, quartets and trios, instrumental works and over 200 piano works.

As I have access to nearly all of Ashton's piano music, so I deemed it more sensible to create a separate thread for him and will in due course move the sonatas over to this thread. My thanks to Mr P for his on-going sterling efforts.

Thanks for these new Ashton pieces, Malc. I think it is good idea to centralise Ashton's pieces here and give him more prominence, as he certainly deserves to be more widely known.

I thought it easier to group together my previous posting of the Ashton Sonatas - plus a new version of No. 5.

Thanks Malc. It almost slipped by me, but the op.137 just caught my eye and not found in my library and amongst the four lovely pieces is a lovely TOCCATA which caught my fancy, and likely Freduccio's. Much fun here.

Keep your eyes peeled, as there are a couple more Toccatas to come. One which is quite difficult to say the least.
