Aleksandr Tikhonovich Grechaninov [Gretchaninov]. Born 1864 Moscow, died 1956 New York]. Studied at the Moscow Conservatoire (1881-90) where his teachers included Kashkin and Safonov for piano, Laroch, Gubert, Arensky and Taneyev for composition. He then went to St Petersburg Conservatoire, where he graduated in 1893 after studying with Rimsky-Korsakov. One of his graduation pieces was his Quintet No.1 with which, he won First Prize, in a composition competition organised by Belaieff. From 1903 became much involved with the ethno-graphic society of Moscow University and arranged a number of folksongs from various regions. Accepted positions at Berkman Music School and the Gnesin Institute (1906) and these were the impetuous for his considerable output for children and beginners. He also taught at the Moscow Conservatoire from 1906-22. His students include: Arakishvilli, Iordansky, Krasev, Shenshin, Stanchinksy, Vasilenko and Ziring. In 1925 he immigrated to Paris, and then from 1939 settled in USA, where he became an Amercian citizen in 1946. Gretchaninov’s style was much influenced by Tchaikovsky and the Mighty Handful, as well as elements of folksong. He is best known for his chamber and choral works; his church music being innovative in its symphonic and operatic expression. He is also particularly noted for his numerous works for piano aimed at children.
Owing to the large number of piano works....which hopefully we will continue to add to, I have given Grechaninov his own thread in the archive. My thanks to the other scanners who have contributed towards this thread.
