Books related to music

If anyone has a copy of the book about Joseph Holbrooke
by Paul Watt and Anne-Marie Forbes, I'd be very interested
to know what they think of it. It's fairly expensive, so I need
to be sure it's worth the money. Thank you.

In anticipation of not having any replies to my enquiry,
I drove to Oxford yesterday to look for a copy in Blackwell's
Bookshop Music Department. Bingo! They had one, and I'm
pleased to say that it is it indeed an excellent publication -
THE Holbrooke 'bible'.
It was also pleasing to see some other newish publications of
biographies of British composers on their shelves, including
ones on Brian Ferneyhough and Herbert Howells.
My luck was also in on Friday, when a trip to a Eastgate
Bookshop in Warwick presented me with a rare opportunity
to buy a copy of Jonathan Rennert's 1975 biography of the
English 18/19th century composer and artist, William Crotch.
Amongst his achievements are various piano arrangements
of Handel choral works, which I have, composition of the
Big Ben chimes, and a number of exquisite pencil sketches.
(The Big Ben chimes a.k.a. Westminster Chimes (or Quarters)
are the five E major bars in 5/4 time, struck in different
combinations to indicate each quarter of every hour.)

Hello and a happy new year to everyone!

I have something for you that - unfortunately - not even natives will understand... It's a theory book by Karg-Elert and maybe several people on this forum got in contact with Karg-Elert and his music, his very detailed and 'over-notated' piano and organ works and - in certain circumstances - possibly his theoretical output. As far as I know did Karg-Elert love mathematics and geometry since he always sets his theories and models into geometric relations. The result is that normal people like me do not understand a single word! This is quite bothering to me since I am very interested in Karg-Elert's harmonic language and his usages of modulation, melody, rhythm and harmony. Although I have some of his other harmony books (like the 'Harmonologic' or the quite obscure 'little' practical school of composition of which a promised third and the second half of the second volume has never been published) this is a tough one. I do not completely understand the other mentioned books because of my lack of mathematical abilities (I'm studying law).
Nevertheless I hope this will help some people with their understanding in music theory!
