does anyone know where the Sarabande in F Major by Handel comes from? It was famously included in the beginning of the collection 'Masterpieces of Piano Music.' Is it a keyboard work or a transcription of another instrumental work? Does it have an HWV number?

Here's something unusual - Otto Nicolai is not recognised for his (few) piano works, but this one is new to me...

This is the first time I've seen this rare score posted on a public forum. It's always been 'private share only'. For those who love music that goes directly to the heart, as I do, this should make them happy.

Nicolai wrote these three Etudes as a thank you gift to Liszt for visiting him in Vienna in 1838 or 1839.
Actually, the exquisite Etude Op.40 No.3, in D flat, called 'Gruss an Liszt' Etude was well known at the old pianophilia around 15 years ago. It was one of the most desired and most requested scores here, on GFF. and other piano forums.

Ornstein, a member of the old pp, posted many recording of rare and forgotten music. Among those was Friedrich Höricke's beautiful interpretation of this etude, from one of his German radio broadcast concerts in 1996. Ornstein doesn't appear on the members' list; his last post seems to have been in 2010. I would like to post this recording (7.7 MB, 3.26 minutes), but I don't know what correct etiquette is. If Malcolm or Fred could advise me, I would be grateful. Thanks very much.

When Otto Nicolai is remembered, if at all, it's usually for three things:

1. He composed the opera The Merry Wives of Windsor
2. He founded the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
3. He has the same dates as Chopin

I didn't notice your post until now, and maybe a reply is still useful to you.
It is the Sarabande from the Concert for Oboe and orchestra, HWV 287.
So indeed it is a transcription.
On IMSLP there are other arrangements, but not for piano solo.
