Stan Freeman was one of the elite cocktail-style pianists who played at the luxurious Manhattan hotels during the 1950s. His friend and frequent piano partner was Cy Walter, who is much better known through his recordings and many published transcriptions. Freeman and Walter had a radio program during the 1950s entitled "Piano Playhouse", which featured their mind-boggling duet pianistics.

There isn't much available on Stan Freeman regarding his transcriptions, but an important exception is the folio posted here. Clearly, his style was drastically different from Walter's; much less adventuresome harmonically, but still beautifully conceived and quite challenging technically. Enjoy!

Dear Benjamin,

Thanks for posting "Manhattan Serenade" and thus finally completing Alter's "Manhattan Suite" for us. Although the "Serenade" was by far the most popular of the set, my copy is incomplete. So I'm very happy to have this important work complete on Pianophilia.

With reference to marking scores so as to discourage the use of our posted music by various internet sites for profit, I am also now marking all scores uploaded to Pianophilia. Everything that I have uploaded in the past and will in the future is intended for everyone's personal enjoyment for FREE. We do this work in the spirit of preserving important piano music from the past. I only recently became aware that virtually hundreds of my postings to Pianophilia are available on-line for sale in packages (at high prices). This practice is deplorable. I only wish that I could tell any potential customers of these sites of the existence of Pianophilia, so they could save their money. Marking scores is hopefully one way to achieve that goal.

All Best,

Frank
