Pianophilia

Another German composer within the novelty idiom, but much later (ca. 1940s) was Hans Bund. His records on German labels such as Odeon and Telefunken are all extremely fast novelty style (with terrific technique).

One last German novelty composer for now (there are many others!). Rio Gebhardt wrote a number of syncopated novelties, very melodic and well-scored. He also composed a Piano Concerto (which I've posted on the "Romantic Piano Concertos" thread, and a jazz-novelty for 2 Pianos (posted on the "4 Hands on Two pianos" thread.

Published: 1930.

Almond Blossom One of Billy's broad melodies, but the harmonies are more dissonant than usual, giving an appropriately oriental flavour. There is nothing here of the fake chinoiserie of say, 'In a Chinese Temple Garden', the style is at once much bolder and more subtle. The middle section is built on a minor version of the same melody, while the ending is particularly effective.

A Temple in Kyoto is very short, really just an interlude, and makes no attempt to be anything other than atmospheric.

Cherry Dance opens with a bitonal section, i.e. left and right hands are playing in different keys. As they are also playing in the same register, this involves some crossing of hands. The main theme is made up of broken arpeggio figures. There is a beautiful dolce section in the middle which perhaps sounds more Russian than Japanese.

Coming to the end of all my Mayerl fillers.
As Frank points out the number of Mayerl arrangements / transcriptions is huge but something to look forward to.

Of his main solo works my own collection is misssing:-

I'm pretty sure that I have photocopies of the last Mayerls you need, and I'll try and find them for you. A warning in advance, I remember these were pretty dismal looking copies (probably the reason I didn't post them the first time)! I'll try to enhance them as much as possible before posting. Ok we'll get it on with Mayerl when I get back from work tonight, including the transcriptions. I dread the work involved.

Thanks for posting my "Cricket's Lament," wow that was a quite awhile back. I'd originally done a set of 4 where this was the first one. Two of them I've forgotten, and one I have only as a midi file. All that stuff is posted on the "Original Compositions" sub-topic.

For tobyjj (and everyone else too),

I wound up having only 3 of the 5 Mayerls you're still after. "Sennen Cove" is a title that I've been aware of a very long time, but despite searching everything tonight including orchestrations I could not find a trace of it. Same with "Theme From Majestic Interlude", although that title I am not as familiar with.

I have the "100 Syncopated Breaks" folio and scanned the last two pages. I'm not familiar enough with Adobe to make a perfect copy from your scan...I can add the missing pages at the end, but it seems on your scan many pages are of different sizes. Maybe someone more adept with Adobe could go through your scan and make all the pages equivalent in size?

I've made alternate scans of 2 Mayerl scores which tobyjj posted, only because these are clearer (and the tunes are particular favorites of mine).

Before diving into the Mayerl transcription project head first....the very last of the Rio Gebhardt novelty pieces. Despite its title in German, this is anything but children's music!
