Poor old John Farmer - not the better known one
who died in 1601, but the one who died 300 years later.
He seems to be almost completely forgotten now,
despite penning some lovely music, such as the above
hymn By Jesus' Grave from his sacred oratorio Christ
and His Soldiers, first published in 1878.
I suppose his two crimes were (a) to have been a 19th.
century English composer and (b) to have had the same
name as an earlier composer.

As someone who has strong interests in both music
and Meccano, I feel it is my duty to put in a good word
for Pierre Bastien, the Frenchman who has combined the
the two things together.
Check out this masterpiece of originality, for example:-

The „Fantasia contrappuntistica“ was premiered in 1956
by 14-year-old Maurizio Pollini...was it???!!!

Uh, that's entirely new. I don't think Pollini ever played a note by Busoni !

There may be a certain possibility that it is NOT by Busoni.
Maybe it will fit in the „Music from the British Isles“ thread... ;)

The Fantasia Contrappuntistica Op24 by Kenneth Leighton
was played by Pollini at the Busoni Competition in Bolzano
in 1956, winning the composition prize for Leighton.

We haven't had an anagram quiz for sometime so I thought I would produce a festive quiz to keep you all busy between the hangovers. There is a common link that binds all these composers together, I suspect that only three or four names will be known but as you realise the link and then cheat you will find the rest easily enough.

1. Born in Gold Boas (7,7)
2. X-men seize Jo (4,7)
3. A dull rail shaver (6,9)
4. H.R.H. loaned man jail (6,4,6)
5. Close to late miser (10,6)
6. Watch Shrek in Jim's botch (4,9,8)
7. I shop in jazz gem (6,8)
8. I count cork vanes (5,10)
9. Jovial Jane needs London cheese maps (4,6,8,2,11)
10. Notes a salty seas crab (7,5,1,6)

I need hardly say have a good Christmas and enjoy the quiz
regards
Brian

Actually the answer to that is no Tim, the first one whose birthday is not known was christened on that day and is assumed as his birthday. Now give us the answers!!!
