Alfor i would love to see the obscure violin sonata u mention from Dale. Is he a late romantic? I am very interested in this.

Tony
The Dale violin sonata (like the piano sonata) has been recorded, on the Dutton label; there's a preview of the sound of the work available on Amazon at: http://www.amazon.com/Benjamin-Dale-Com ... 707&sr=8-9
It certainly sounds lushly late Romantic, rather Delian...

Now 78 pages of

Benjamin DALE
Sonata for Violin & Pianoforte op. 11 (1921-22)
A mature work, has much in common with John Ireland. Typically british late-romantic-impressionistic style.

Dale op.11 violin part.pdf
You can get the recording here for £ 4.99:

P.S. Apart from the Dale op. 1 there are a couple of British piano sonatas which can be recommended for concert use:
John Ireland (the two editions differ - as far as I could detect - only in an added sixth in the final chord of the first mvt.)
Constant Lambert (an appealing mixture of Ravel and Jazz patterns)
Lennox Berkeley (copy... - all his piano works have been re-issiued in one volume)
Gordon Jacob (I can post that, if anybody is interested)
Franz Reizenstein (two; "Hindemith in Britain" - but much more appealing to me than the German orginal!)
Alan Bush (his early sonata op. 2 is obviously hard to get, so are his later sonatas, jealously guarded by the Alan Bush trust).
Howard Ferguson (especially fine are the first 2 mvts., the 2nd being truly romantic)

IMO it's quite ironic that a trust for Britain's foremost communist composer is so keen to insist on such a capitalist concept as copyright to prevent people from getting to know the music of Bush which is neglected even in his own country (In fact a lot of premieres of his works had to be given in the GDR!).

Just a little hint for those not only interested in piano music:
Probably the finest violin concerto composed in the GDR by a composer who completely supported this political system, but nevertheless composed a masterwork which had the honour to be premiered and recorded by David Oistrakh:

Sonata for the Pianoforte (crisply played, the last mvt. reveals a fine subdued Jazz influence)
