It isalways a problem with foreign names so i just took what was given on the net as a v or a w are very interchangeable and for us a nightmare.

I think 1965-2010 Chopin Comp.with two blanks at 1990 and 1995 would fit the bill, can't say I have heard of half of them but that as we know is the stupid competition circuit which usually only exposes mediocrity to the public gaze whilst genuine talent is discarded. It is no fun being a genius, nobody likes you.

In self-defence, I saw Mark I of the quiz before Tim had edited it by putting in the number of letters for each name. At that point I was well and truly stumped (apart from 1 and 8). I didn't get round to going back to Tim's message, when the additional clues would have helped. The connection to the Chopin competition escaped me; even so, I should certainly have got at least another three.

Thanks chaps for your feedback. I left out the word lengths originally
to add to the challenge, but then realised that that was a bad idea.
Also, I fancied the paradoxical idea of having clues containing no clues,
as in 6 and 7!

Apparently, the last winner of the Chopin Competition was a somewhat
controversial choice.

This is really an open-ended question.

As a big fan of the Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel Op24,
I was wondering if there are any similar works out there (i.e. Brahmsian piano
solo variations on Handelian themes) which anyone could suggest.

My own candidates for this category are as yet just these three:-

Mandyczweski 30 Variations on a Theme of Handel Op5,
Mandyczweski 10 Variations on a Theme of Handel Op6,
Rudolf Niemann Variations on a Theme of Handel Op22.

Fortunately, these works are all available on IMSLP, as is
Moscheles Variations on a Theme of Handel Op29,
although this work is clearly not Brahmsian in style.
