Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
For the 3 remaining ones, I'm trying to justify
Joubert for no.7 (but can't),
and conjuring with the letters (a, a, b, i, m, n, r) for no.8,
whilst still working on the Greek alphabet for no.6.

Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
4. Yes, Rob is correct; it's Kevin Volans (my school Latin: volans - present participle of volare = to fly; hence volans - flying)
I remember Kevin Volans as a student at my University (Univ of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) in the early '70s, when he played at a number of student lunch-time concerts.
7. Tim is correct. Joubert was arrived at, in contorted fashion, thus:
Yours truly = moi, Jo (is that fair)? Mr Bath = Hubert Bath (he of the Cornish rhapsody), presumably pronounced 'ubert by Eliza Doolittle. I was quite pleased with this one!
Hints for the last two:
8 is the jazz man, probably better known as a pianist. The answer's not his birth name, by the way (if that's any help).
6 was born in Glasgow, but ended up as Director of the Music College at the University of Cape Town.
Well, in a week's time I should be about to get on a plane for my annual vacation in the UK. Thanks heavens that the BAA strike didn't materialise! So quiz participation may come to a halt.
Regards
Jo

6. Chisholm,
8. Ibrahim.
Well, great quiz Jo. I've learned a whole lot of
hitherto unfamiliar names.
The reason for Ramone was simply that I thought it
was an anagram of an(cient) Rome. I'd never have
got that one, but then Rob's much cleverer than me.
Please do some more of the same when you get the chance.

Re: Musical puns, jokes, and teasers
Methinks they're too easy!
Well, having said that, the second five composers are more obscure.
