Ernest Guiraud (1837-1892). Born in New Orleans - originally studied with his father, who helped to produce his opera "Le Roi David" in New Orleans, when the composer was only 15 years old. He then went to Paris, which was to remain his home for the rest of his life. Studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Marmontel (piano) and Halevy (composition) - and won the Grand prix de Rome in 1859 with his cantata 'Bajazet et le joueur de flute'. He stayed in Rome for four years, then returned to Paris where he concentrated much of his life in writing stage works / operas. He was appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1876 - and amongst his students were Debussy, Gedalge and Loeffler. He is remembered for his recitatives to Bizet's Carmen and he completed the orchestration to Offenbach's Contes d'Hoffmann.

You may want to correct Guirand to Guiraud. This little piece has been quite popular in its days as I have found it in many music albums of the turn of the Century.

A couple of lesser known French composers (thanks to Mr P).

Eugene Ketterer (1831-1870) French pianist and composer. Studied at Paris Conservatoire. He published 290 piano pieces, most in a salon style, but many did become very popular in its day.

Ketterer - Op 70 Herculanum de David, Fantaisie Brillante Edmond Laurens (1851-1925) Studied with Guiraud at the Paris Conservatoire: later becoming teacher of harmony and composition there. Works include opera and works for stage, Suite Japonaise for orchestra, Silhouettes for piano & orchestra, piano pieces and songs.

Thank you for these, Malcolm. Ketterer is definitely salon music, but usually very pleasant and effective for what it is. Nice to see music by Laurens, more seldom.
