4. is correct! A wrestler is almost a boxer and the clue refers to the infamous Boxer Rebellion in China.

3. & 5. incorrect, sorry. I don't know what a verdier is!

3. is a wheeled item used in the garden. The pronunciation in English is the same as the pronunciation of this French composer's name, who is spelt differently.

5. Is a terrible clue and therefore probably the hardest. What is nastier than a spot/zit? Then adjectivise it. Then a slight vowel substitution gives this composer's name. The pronunciations are similar but not quite the same. This was a bit of a liberty I will admit.

I am back!!!! all I can say at the moment is that it was a rotten trick to post it just after I had left to persecute the French with my presence for two weeks so I had no chance to answer and reply accordingly, however I compliment you on your warped thought processes, they are quite devious for you. I have been doing the Times crossword in the train and have sharpened up a bit so I will be issuing a riposte to Rob very shortly, watch this space sometime in the near future. You should know Rob that adverbs are banned in Yorkshire because no-one wants to sound like a Southern twit, its so obvious I am surprised you didn't know that ...you're from the south aren't you?

Phew! That was close - I'd just logged on to delete the quiz through
apparent lack of interest. (Several other messages/posts in other
threads weren't so lucky earlier this evening, when the urge to hit
the delete button became overwhelming.)

Anyway, here are some tips:-

1. Every clue (apart from No.11) is an anagram, indicated by one
of the words in the clue itself, as with normal cryptic crosswords.

2. Most of the answers aren't necessarily famous as composers,
although one has surname which when spelt backwards might give
rise to comment!

3. All ten men followed chronologically, and there have been ten
more since, of which No.16 and No.20 have the same surname.

4. My introductory comment contains a certain word spelt in a
particular way, which is intended to be a hint as to the general
theme of the quiz. Get the theme and everything falls into place.

Wow, such confidence you have in me, Rob! I couldn't do anything yesterday - I was stuck all day in a Council meeting for the SA Chemical Institute. And to top it all, a distribution board in our building had a meltdown - literally! - and took out all power to our internet. Talk about frustration!

As for Brian doing the Times crossword on the train - well, the Times crossword is actually syndicated in one of our dailies here, so I tackle it regularly. One of the compilers seems to have a particularly contorted imagination, and I often have to cogitate for a few days before getting the whole thing finished.

OK - time to tackle Tim's tortuous (torturous?) teasers.
