Professor and Examiner in Harmony and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

I'm sure his name is much hated amongst those who took the exam, especially if one of his pieces were included in the exams (Grade 1-7).

I posted the Op 8 Miniatures by William Yeates Hurlstone (1876 - 1906) some weeks back and also mentioned the Capriccio in B minor, which is now duly posted [with thanks to Sir P in digging this out of the dungeons].

Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946). English composer. Studied at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 1892. He was the first holder of the Macfarren Scholarship. His earliest works were presented at concerts through the Academy. He was founder and editor of "The New Quarterly Music Review" (1893-96); toured as a musical comedy conductor (1894-95); organised and conducted concerts devoted to works by young British composers; conducted a military band and later the New Brighton symphony orchestra (1897-1901). At the same time he held various teaching engagements - from 1907-1934 as professor of music at Birmingham University; and then as Chairman of the Board of Trinity College of Music. In 1938 aged 70 he traveled to India and Australia returning to England on the eve of World War II.

As a composer he was drawn towards exotic subjects with particular interest in Celtic and oriental cultures; and his interest in programme music is reflected in his many titled works that relate to literature and mythology [often on an epic scale]. He had an exquisite orchestral palette and his music is well worth exploring [a number of his orchestral and vocal works were recorded by Hyperion].
