That's where cultural inheritance or parents' nationality or the greater part of the subject's career rather than birthplace comes into account.

Our categories here, like categories in real life, can be somewhat hazy & fluid. I've always tried to set up threads that have some logic to them, not out of any real wish to make people obey rules but because it makes the site easier to navigate and maintain.

In Reti's case I note that Wikipedia mentions that Reti emigrated to the USA and became a US Citizen. They categorise him under: 'American people of Serbian descent'! But then many US writers say that Hindemith, Korngold and Bartok were Americans! Rather like me insisting that Robert Gerhard & Egon Wellesz were British! Reti is as much Austrian as anything else.

Austrian or American ???

Frederick Brandeis, born 1832, Vienna - died 1899, New York. Pupil of Czerny; settled in the USA in 1849, where he was active as a pianits, conductor and organist. He wrote numerous pieces for military band, a Romanza for oboe and orchestra, a ballade The Sunken Cloister, some chamber music, plus numerous piano pieces and songs.

I have posted his Op 54 Toccata.

his original first name is "Friedrich". According to an austrian music dictionary born Vienna July 5th 1835, died New York May 14th 1889.
According to Walter Niemann Brandeis was a pupil of the Wiener Akademie and studied with Fischhof, Czerny and Rufinatscha.
