There have been some very interesting developments in piano design over the last few years. Here is one - the 102 note Opus102 piano by Stephen Paulello in France.

Hi Fred,
I am very excited by the piano in that the sound is not that of the Big Boys, the Steinways, Bechs, Bosens and Bluths. This is quintessentially a French sounding piano, in the family tree of Erard and Pleyel and just like their organs, has that fiery reedy quality. The piano sounds like a brass ensemble to my ears with a nice transparent bass which balances well with the rest of the piano. The treble needs a little work to improve the sound quality but as it is unlikely that 102 keys will become the norm then maybe it is not so important as long as the notes in the usual range are fully voiced. I liked its looks and loved the ipad hidden inside so page turning can be easily facilitated, no music rests to get jammed and pages that get blown away or whipped away by a loose violin bow.
As for the Toccata it was composed to show off the 102 key range and apart from that is it in no way remarkable and I won't be disappointed if I never hear it again. I presume the composer composed his piece without actually playing the piano and understanding what makes it so special, hence the music being a failure. This piano with it's special qualities of non-decaying high notes and ability to produce sounds from ppp to fff easily must be first understood before anyone should attempt to compose for it as in one sense the 102 keys are a purely mechanical thing and not something that makes the piano so different and sets it apart from the Big Boys.
I will be interested to hear your thoughts because of your huge interest in piano manufacturing developments.
