Theme et Variations cis mollAn extended and at least pianistically excellent work, composed in 1909, published in 1923. So five years after the 1917 revolution a soviet editor had the courage to publish a completely "bourgeois" work, influenced by composers like Tchaikovsky, Arensky, Cui (?)!

Dear Alfred, thanks for the interesting Krylov variations. I would say the variations are somewhat uneven in their quality and inspiration but what fun to play as they fall easily under the fingers and are very pianistic as you say. i can definitely hear a Tschaikowsky influence there. With the revolution well behind him, we can be glad the publisher was brave enough to publish them, .

Apparently, this is a commercial phrase indicating a common deadline prior to which a promissory note has to be paid. Now why Hiller has used this phrase remains mysterious. Probably by joke.
Any case, it gives me the opportunity to thank you for all the scores you share here.

I would guess that his publisher had given him a deadline for a composition and it was Hiller's way of being certain that it was ready on time to fulfil his contract with the publisher. If you remember, Tschaikowsky had to write a piece every month for The Seasons and required his manservant to remind him the night before each deadline so that he could write something before breakfast. (Oh that composing could be so easy).
