Gernsheim a Classicist? The pianists on the above CDs and myself have him down as a Romantic,
or are we missing something?

A romantic classicist - of course.

G's pieces resemble early Schumann to my ancient ears and thus an early romantic to my mind. And I have greatly been enjoying this series of G's pieces, dear Alfor.

Great new avatar, dear Frank! This isn't Leonardo da Vinci, is it?

Friedrich GERNSHEIM
Auf der Lagune op. 71 (decicated to Miss Kleeberg, an immensely appreciated pianist at the turn of the 19th century. Because of her delicate and sensitive playing she was called "The rose-fingered lady")

Dear Alfred,

Hahaha - no, Leonardo it isn't (although a greater compliment I could never imagine!) Just a hopeless romantic...

All the Gernsheim continues to surprise and delight! I especially love the "Auf der Lagune" Barcarolle, and Op. 61 is particularly beloved here, particularly in the clarity of a 600 dpi scan. Heartfelt thanks for continuing the Gernsheim postings!!

All Best,

Frank (da Vinci)

Thank you, Alfred. Auf der Lagune just flows along like gentle stream, a nice little charmer and great salon music.

I must have missed the op.61 first time around, as it's new to me. And this is a real "meat & potatoes" suite of pieces with plenty of contrast in them. A nice showpiece, Gernsheim style, is the final Impromptu which is more like a rollicking scherzo and as much fun to play as for the listener. Glad to hear that Frank is having as much fun with G as I am.

An aside: Having just been playing through several Niemann scores today, I am struck by how much more interesting G's pieces are.

Dear Frank, dear fleubis,

thank you for feedback!

A lot more Gernsheim to follow. And I just received a batch of "real" scores, which I will all scan in due course:

Andriessen, Binet, Jaques-Dalcroze, Borremans, Bungert, 3 vols. Cimarosa, Dragoi, Duysburgh, Franco Mendes, J. Hofmann, Lubienski, Mottu, Kuiler, Flor. Peeters, Peterson-Berger, Rhene-Baton,
A. Richardson (Sonatina), Robert de Roos, Roubier, Ruyneman, Shirinsky, Seiss, Stutschewski, Wolkow, Wijdeveld, Franz Weisz, Balfour Gardiner, F. Dreyschock, Blanchet, Espla.

Interested?!
Best regards, Alfor S. Cans

Wow! What a treasure trove. I am particularly interested in Isidor Seiss and Blanchet, but look forward to all your postings!

Dear Alfred,

Your listing of composers for future postings is so exciting as to give heart palpitations!!! :D As our friend 4candles, I too caught the names Blanchet and Seiss within the list (enough to excite any pianist!) but the thrill of discovering new treasures among the other "less-well-known-yet-exceptionally-noteworthy" composers is even greater. Thank you for your foresight to acquire these incredible scores, and once again for your incredible generosity by offering to share them with us! :D

With great interest and much anticipation,

All the Best,

Frank :D :D :D
