York Bowen Sonatas are Opp.6, 9 & 12 as per the Danny Driver recording on Hyperion. The York Bowen website is not too helpful on these: not even listing the 2nd (C# minor) and 3rd sonata (D minor).

Most of York Bowen's unpublished works, including the early Sonatas, are held at the Royal Academy of Music. Unfortunately, because the material is copyright, the Library will not make copies unless permission has been given by the York Bowen Estate. At present the York Bowen Estate is run by a firm of solicitors, called Bunkers and based in Brighton, who don't seem to be very interested in any of this so are not the eaiest people to deal with.
If any of you want to pursue this contact Kathy at the RAM library and she should be able to point you in the right direction.
The 1st Sonata, though printed, is incredibly rare, I do not know of any copy in a public library or in the hands of any collector friends, so this too would need to be obtained via an officially approved copy from the RAM.

The obvious interest in the music makes me wonder if Weinberger may consider publishing these along with the other Bowen they have already done. I've had a chat with Danny and he is going to contact them and offer to edit the Sonatas for publication in the hope that this may provoke some action.

It does take a long time to get permission from the Estate via Bunkers, since i guess that Solicitors don't prioritise work that earns them little or nothing. When i requested permission for a pile of Bowen, I think it took a couple of months in total, but I did not have to pay a fee. This was astounding as it was one of the flashiest letterheads I have ever seen.

To balance this out, the charges at the Royal Academy of Music are the highest i have experienced with UK libraries, but the copies are superb and it is well worth the dosh, and unlike Cambridge University Library you don't get copies of the Librarians finger.

William Yeates Hurlstone (1876 - 1906) Precocious musician, composed waltzes as a child which his father had privately published. Studied at the Royal College of Music, with Stanford in composition and Dannreuther for piano. Performed his own piano concerto in 1896. In 1905 was appointed professor at the Royal College of Music. His early death no doubt robbed British music of a very promising composer.

I also recommend the two CDs available through Lyrita which include the concerto, orchestral and chamber works by Hurlstone.

Someone asked me the other day whether I had any music by Hurlstone. Despite writing a number of works for piano the vast majority of these remain in manuscript, held by the RCM - the only two specifically published works were the Op 8 Miniatures and the Capriccio in B minor. So as a personal gift for Jo....the Op 8 miniatures [I thought I also had the Cappriccio but didn't locate it when I searched....although did find another Ashton work, which I'll scan when I can]!!

Concur with the CD's. If I don't listen to the concerto at least once a week, I get withdrawal symptoms.

Most profuse thanks for the gift! Thus ends a 40-year quest: I played no 4 for a Trinity College exam in my very distant youth, and have been looking for the whole Op 8 set ever since.
