Dear Frank,

It is a pleasure to be able to give the happiness that comes from sharing.

I have some more surprises for the near future from my collection, which I hope will keep members happy.

Best wishes to you all.

Peter.

Torn between Chopin and the Etudes thread ?

An enjoyable rhythmic study "Chopinette" on the Ab major waltz by Howard Flynn [although its title is a little cringe worthy]!!

I agree! Thanks so much Peter & Malc. These etudes are excellent! They are very playable and offer interesting technical challenges. It is a joy to add these to my collection, and to my music desk.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought this was the most appropriate place...

Here is a link to amazon.de where I have just found an audio sample of an Etude by Henri Stierlin-Vallon. Unfortunately this is not connected to the set of studies posted here, but I think this gives a (tantalising?) glimpse into the soundworld of the composer. The compilation is dedicated to pieces inspired by various birds and is, for want of a more imaginative title, called "Birds/Oiseaux/Vogel".

After reading the moderators notes on posting sound recordings, I assumed that, as Amazon has itself posted the sample, I wasn't breaching audio copyright by posting this, but the moderators will know best.

The piece is called "La Volière enchantée" ("The Enchanted Aviary") and is track 4 on disc 2:

http://www.amazon.de/Birds-Oiseaux-V%C3 ... l_1#disc_1

Incidentally, a couple of other pieces by this composer have been recorded - by Daniel Spiegelberg (quite recently) and by (I think) André Perret in the 1960s.

Haha! Yes, I think this is fine - I can't see it can possibly put us at risk of copyright infringement by quoting Amazon. Anyway, it gives them free advertising!

Often we prefer members to post links rather than the items themselves (eg scores from Sibley @ Rochester) so that the website owners can monitor the number of accesses.

Thanks for confirming Rob!

A couple of scintilating etudes specifically for left hand:

C W Greulich - of which I can find no biographical information [but no doubt someone will surprise me]:
Greulich C.W - Etude for L-H.pdf
Jacob Schmitt (1803-1853) Brother and pupil of Aloys Schmitt. Born Obernburg, Bavaria and died in Hambourg. Piano teacher and composer of some 370 works primarily for the piano and includes sonatinas, etudes, rondos, nocturnes etc. plus a piano method.
Schmitt J - Etude de Chant for L-H.pdf
