Don't know that composer, though it would fit. The one I had in mind has a very similar spelling - 1900 to 1936 - and died in a gruesome car accident in Debrecen in Hungary. The second part of his forename means eight notes!

I keep missing these [too busy at work]......but Ferroud died in a car accident in Debrecen.

Yes. Pierre-Octave Ferroud. Apparently he was decapitated in the accident. One hopes it was quick. Too young. Very gifted. His orchestral music is quite wonderful.

I should have thought the clue through a bit more: 'Persian lute of iron' would have been most appropriate (an 'oud' being a Persian lute).

So this is where we are:

France
1 Almost something you could float away on. (4) - LALO (ie not Li-lo)
2 Bigger than a bush and lighter than black. (6) - GRETRY (grey-tree)
3 'Vehicle' to help with the gardening. (7)
4 Not quite the Wrestler rebellion. (6)
5 Nastier than spotty. (5)

6 More procrastinatory, perhaps. (7) - DALLIER (one who dallies more than someone else)
7 Present to male offspring. (8) - CHAUSSON (show son)
8 The iron man. (7) - FERROUD (Ferrous being the prefix for the lower of iron's valencies)
9 Pleader. (7) - GROVLEZ (ie groveller)
10 Happy animal doctor. (7) - JOLIVET (jolly vet - surely the easiest clue, and my favourite)
11 Maud almost came into this. (5) - JADIN (not quite Jardin)
12 Brian, trying to say where he's from in a language he doesn't know. (5)
13 Almost the sound of Spring. (7) - ROUSSEL (Rustle as in Sinding's horrid little potboiler)

3 is easy, 4, 5 & 12 not so easy.
Hurry up - I have another one on the brew!

4. is correct! A wrestler is almost a boxer and the clue refers to the infamous Boxer Rebellion in China.

3. & 5. incorrect, sorry. I don't know what a verdier is!

3. is a wheeled item used in the garden. The pronunciation in English is the same as the pronunciation of this French composer's name, who is spelt differently.

5. Is a terrible clue and therefore probably the hardest. What is nastier than a spot/zit? Then adjectivise it. Then a slight vowel substitution gives this composer's name. The pronunciations are similar but not quite the same. This was a bit of a liberty I will admit.

Next set is ready. Do you want more?
