Hello All - From oren's recent postings I can see that most of the Mayerl material had been scanned at some time in the past, and is easily posted so I will end with
the "H" titles so as not to duplicate work involved in scanning originals. If any member lacks a particular piece by Mayerl, please do let me know and I will post it.

Hello everybody,
I recently found this interesting forum and I'm just thrilled to find so many scarce ragtime and novelty piano scores and transcriptions!!
I would like to thank the members who have uploaded cool stuff here and I'm particularly grateful to Frank Himpsl for the fantastic piano roll transcriptions of his and the rare scores he's posting on Pianophilia!
I would also like to contribute with some pieces, hoping they'll be of some interest for anybody.
I see there are a lot of neat novelty tunes in this "School of Syncopation" section; I'd like to attach here an old rag from 1900 to start, that is "Darky In The Woodpile" by Barbara Kleinbeck (it's quite a raggy rag!).

I see that Frank Himpsl has posted the sheet music of two rare novelties composed by Walker O'Neill, "Scale It Down" and "Dusting The Keys".
While I'm sure that everybody here is familiar with the recordings of Billy Mayerl, maybe there's anybody who hasn't listened to O'Neill's piano playing yet.
In such case here's also attached a zip file containing the phonograph recordings of O'Neill playing his own "Scale It Down" and "Dusting The Keys" (sorry for the poor sound quality of my disc...)

I hope you enjoy them :) !
Best
Luigi

Welcome Luigi!

Thanks for your kind remarks about the roll transcriptions and novelty postings. You'll always find much music to share here at PianoPhilia.

Also thanks for the extremely rare ragtime score of "Darky In The Woodpile." I have been searching for that score for at least 20 years, ever since I discovered the piece on a Peerless nickelodeon roll.
It is an excellent example of folk ragtime, and of particular interest that is was written by a woman composer. It was kind of you to post that along with the Walker O'Neill HMV recording!

Best Regards,

Frank Himpsl

Darky in the Woodpile? How about a new thread, Politically Incorrect Piano Music? Joking aside -- thank you, Luigi, for this rare gem.

In answer to that, here is my own transcription of Bill Edwards' raggy version of "Amazing Grace."

Hi Fred,

I like the Bill Edwards cut - it's like a semi-classical "Theme And Variations" work. Lots of imagination; doesn't destroy the
essence of the tune by ragging it to death. Thanks for posting this along with your transcription!

Dear Frank,
thank you very much!
Yes, I posted "Darky In The Woodpile" because I saw it was included on that piano roll (http://www.valleyforgemusicroll.com/new_page_6.htm) and, since you didn't indicated the composer, I imagined you didn't have the sheet music yet.
I'm curious about "Belles Of The Blue Grass". I don't have the sheet music of this piece myself, but I see the composer is M. Thornton (there's another piece with that title composed by M.M. Thorne), so I imagine that's Mamie Thornton.
I have another nice rag by this composer, entitled "Barbecue Rag": its second strain, in the second half of the second page of the score (the one marked as page 3), is rather weak, but the first strain is an infectious rag and all the rest of the piece is also very nice.
Here it is, attached here.
I see you posted your great transcription of "Hunting The Ball Rag", a favorite of mine, and you wrote about its similarity with "Buck Shots" from the Wendling & Kortlander folio. That's great! I happen to have that folio, but I didn't notice that because I had never tried that particular piece.
If any "Pianophiliacs" are interested, I can upload that folio of Wendling & Kortlander. For the moment, here's just "Buck Shots".

Dear Luigi,

Thanks for posting another very good folk rag, which I have never came across before. Yes, I recut "Belles Of The Blue Grass" having transcribed it from a Wurlitzer Automatic Harp roll to 88note format. I consider this composition to be one of the greatest folk rags ever written. It is wonderful to know that the composer was a woman and that she wrote additional ragtime! These pieces are so rare I have not seen them in almost 50 years of collecting - including canvassing the Library Of Congress and many private collections. It's great whenever a new original ragtime composition turns up.

Thanks again & all best,

Frank

Theo Uden Masman was a Dutch born pianist who played with a group called "The Ramblers" throughout Belgium, possibly in other European countries as well. He composed a number of excellent novelty piano solos which today are very scarce. Most were originally published in Belgium. One was published in the US.
