I have one of the Merikanto PC's, but i cannot say which one as i ordered it yonks ago and chucked it in me loft out of disinterest.

There are at least two that are/were available in different formats from the FMIC, but the carriage charges are large if you live more than 20 metres away from their distribution centre.

Next time you venture up there Thal I would beg that you bring the score down with you. Aarre Merikanto was a truly extraordinary composer. I added a worklist to the Wikipedia page last year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aarre_Merikanto

My loft is inhabited by the very rare concerto eating silverfish, otherwise known as Lepisma Saccharina Concerticus.

From the catalog of his works, that I've been assembling over the summer the Prelude-Nocturne is probably Opus 84 No. 2 (found audio confirmation on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1kkHsA8KyU ), and from the "Two Piano Pieces", the Prelude-Caprice is Opus 84 No. 3 (youtube confirmation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8DqutzXlHM ).

With the Prelude-Nocturne, I find it interesting that it carries an American 20's popular Jazz/Blues kind of sound to it.

Unfortunately, I can't identify the Barcarolle from "Two PIano Pieces", as he has four Barcarolles in the catalog I've compiled, and I could only eliminate two from music I've downloaded from the Sibley music library (Opus 75 No. 4) and IMSLP (Opus 27 No 6).

So it could be either Opus 14 (which is just a Barcarolle), or the 1908 Barcarolle without an opus number (unconfirmed that it actually exists, but wikipedia notes it). I can't find any recordings online to check against.


As for items I hope to contribute soon; I work for the University of Michigan, and have access to their music library. I just checked out Palmgren's "Suomalaisia Kansanlauluja" and am going to scan it over the weekend. I've also put in three inter-library loan requests for Palmgren's Opus 36 (The Masquerade for two Pianos), Opus 72 (Nocturne in Three Scenes), and Opus 74 (Troi Morceaux for Piano). Not sure when, or if they'll arrive.

Another interesting tidbit from the catalog I've been putting together; only Opus 8 No 3 (Canzonetta) is listed in any of the major libraries of the world (I've been using worldcat.org, the U.S. Library of Congress, and the national libraries of a few other nations as the source of my information). In the Opus 8 you posted, No. 3 is called "Sorg".

Perhaps the Canzonetta is from Opus 8b, which is for piano and violin. (Of which I haven't found any direct evidence of it's existence. Just an mention in unverified sources.)

I did look at the IMSLP list to see if I could locate opus numbers for the three pieces but their list is too generalised. Is there any chance you wodul share your list with me so I can continue to look out for any more Palmgren pieces ?

Sure! Let me clean it up a little bit, and I can post it somewhere accessible.

IMSLP just lifted the list that Wikipedia has. I'm trying to track down T. Tomilla, who that list cites frequently, to find out what their sources were.

Palmgren's Op.37 no2 (Mephistowalzer) was uploaded to IMSLP yesterday (not by me). http://imslp.org/wiki/Mephistowalzer,_O ... en,_Selim)

Only problem with the scan, is that it was tilted, and the edge of the upper right is sometimes cut off, and you sometimes have to deduce what a note is in that area.
