Malc, thanks for posting the Bortkiewicz Op.62 Songs. These are very nice.

May I suggest that if the manuscript scores you have are very fragile that you resort to taking hires photos of them. At least this will preserve them in some digital format before then turn to dust. I actually had to preserve one of my composition teachers old scores this way....this was long before we had scanners, and he got the film originals and I scored a copy of his negatives. Fifty year old newsprint is as bad as today's acid-laced paper. Durand scores come to mind.

Malcolm, I am so incredibly excited to play this music! Thank you so much for these scores. I'm planning on getting a little midi keyboard hopefully soon and will be able to typeset and transcribe much more quickly than my usual method of computer keyboard and mouse. My wife is also very excited about all of these songs and we will eventually be recording those that are in her vocal range.
I'm even thinking of turning some of these songs into piano solo pieces, maybe along with some of the violin and cello pieces. I have the transcription of the violin Havanaise piece, and I think the other pieces could probably work in piano solo format as well. I am very excited to be a part of the rehabilitation of Bortkiewicz' works. Fleubis has a great suggestion of taking photographs instead of scanning. That's what I did with the symphony. Hm, I might even typeset that score too if I get better at reading manuscripts, and fortunately the symphony looks pretty readable.

Alex, glad to see you are excited about this great music as I am. You have some very interesting projects in mind, and I like your transcriptions ideas. As Bortkiewicz is just so full of interesting melodies, transcription sounds like a great idea.

You are quite right: A nice MIDI keyboard will be an immense help in your transcriptions (as it is for me in composition). I found too many musical thoughts would get lost during the technical process of notating via keyboard (never mind that I couldn't write fast enough with pen), but now with a MIDI keyboard input can be very fast.

As promised, I've made some scans of various songs by Bortkiewicz that I had in manuscript. I've done these in greyscale to make the detail clearer and have tried to expland them so hopefully easier to read. Be great if you can produce better copies....and of course, any recordings. I still have the two songs arranged for voice & orchestra, and will try to see if I can scan these at sometime.

Malcolm, thank you so so so much! I received my keyboard yesterday and have begun typesetting Op 47 No. 1 Das gebet. It will take me some time to get used to this new input style, and I need to make time to do it of course, but expect results fairly soon! I have some transcriptions on my mind as well.

As with the Akhmatova volume on the previous page, this volume would likely be a better fit for a 'Soviet Vocal Works' page, but we'll place it here since Sergei Esenin was a famous Russian poet. To be sure, this volume was published in Ukraine and features numerous composers from there as well as a few from the Baltic states...so, yeah, it's not quite 'Russian song', but whatever...

I am nearly done typesetting Das Gebet by Bortkiewicz. I am having difficulty recognizing the German words on this manuscript, and in locating this poem online. Does anyone have a link to the exact poem in this song, or can write down the German lines for me to place into the score? The score was posted by Malcolm in this thread. Thank you!
