We have a pair of unknown composers with Zurron giving us a nice fresh improvisational poem and Gomis having a go at the popular dance known as sevillana. Not unexpectedly this is a type of folk music and dance in the region of Seville. Digging a little further, it seems that the sevillana is derived from old Castilian folk music and dances known as the the Seguidilla (a quick, triple-time old Castillian folk/dance form). In the 19th century Flamenco tendencies influenced the Sevillana--the rhythms are quite pronounced. As I keep seeing many composers write pieces based on these dances, it was my great delight to actually SEE a sevillana actually danced in person and the source of their inspiration.

Thanks for posting these, Alfred.

Lovely, tasteful little miniatures by this chap Zurron. They are like an after-dinner mint! It's like the 19th century salons of Paris migrated to Madrid.

Thank you, Alfred.

P.S.: Now that we are in the "Z's", I fear we may be near the end of the Spanish card catalog, but it's been a great ride!

You are welcome, dear fleubis!

Better to place señor G.d.V. in this thread!

The Polka was adopted into Spanish music...amazing!

Ah, dear Alfor, it seems we've been missing a whole lot of fun in the Zarzuela genre. Two weeks ago I wouldn't have had a clue what it was. Now I've got CD's on order and transcriptions to play. Gonzales has a remarkable gift in orchestrating different styles at the keyboard. We are lucky he didn't pursue a career as an attorney!

Thanks for a wonderful set of delightful transcriptions, Alfred.

Another interesting collection from Gonzales del Valle. And what is Luanco? Luanco is a small coastal town located in the Gozón District, right in the centre of the Asturias coast and very close to Cape Penas, the northernmost end of Asturias in northern Spain. Polkas and mazurkas dot this landscape with a quite lovely barcarolle in this collection. The previously posted "En la Montana" appears in this set which must have been popular enough to be published outside this collection.

A lovely set of pieces, Alfred. Thanks!
