Brian - thanks for the Whiteside. Do any of this type of book
ever cover the issue of different relative finger lengths of
different would-be and wannabe pianists?

Sibley has, yet again, come up trumps with a favourite book
of mine - J.F.Porte's portrait of the great CVS. In reality, it's
a brief review of the composer's published works. Interestingly,
the list of opuses reviewed doesn't include those written at the
end of Stanford's life, since it was written before his death.

Hi Tim,
in answer to your first question I really don't know, but it must be obvious that hand size and finger length are very important regarding the ability to play certain things, I must have a look through my books to see if anyone has written about this question. Obviously these physical questions bring into question all your fingered editions of music which for some people would be impossible.
Regarding Porte, I have his companion book about the music of Elgar written in 1921 which stops at Op.85. very useful and informative catalogues though.

Very little attention, though, is ever paid to the effect of this on pianists.
This could explain why, in scales, I'll always (if poss) use the middle finger
in preference to the ring finger - despite the 'rules', and why I never pay
any attention to fingering if given in piano music. Besides, my brain cannot
process that additional information quickly enough anyway, when playing
something unfamiliar.

Regarding Elgar - I've not come across the book to which you refer, but
it's always interesting to get historical perspectives on music, as the
writer won't have been influenced by the benefit of hindsight, received
wisdom, or subsequent changes in fashion.
