Hello Friends,

I've also had many trials and tribulations in using the large format Mustek Scan Express A3. It was completely impossible for me to run the scanner on Windows 7. The way I solved the problem (which is the way they encourage, of course....) was to spend more money and upgrade to the newest and latest from Mustek. For those who may be interested, the model is Mustek A3 USB 2400 Pro, and it actually works with Windows 7. I bought it from Amazon for US $232.99. I still feel burned by the A3 model (I had 2 of them), but must say that at least the 2400 Pro works and gives good results, reliably.

All Best,

Hello to fellow Mustek-suffering Pianophiliacs!

The model Frank mentions is my reliable workhorse (everything I've posted that was an original - and yes, I'm going to be putting things in the Musical Shows thread again - came from this model). Not being a technical support person anymore, I can't really tell what might be up with the scanner. Some ideas would be to be sure any prior Mustek software and scanners are removed from the system, and some sometimes it makes a difference whether the software is installed before actually connecting the scanner for the first time. I'm running 64-bit Windows 7, so I don't have a way of finding out if that is an issue.

I did some further research last night, and found all the transcriptions listed as being in the BNF's Michelet location. They're listed as rebound in three volumes of French, German, and Italian.

I would say that before investing a lot of effort, and we all know it's difficult and time consuming, what I will try to do is obtain the copies from Vienna of the remaining French masters in series 1, and I will try to get the BNF Michelet to copy 1-14 of the Italian masters we don't yet have (assuming that the sketchy circulation record means what it says). If the scanning isn't already done, I think the best is for efforts to concentrate on the Germans and the second portion of the French and we'll be doing fine.

I say this because it will be a matter of seconds after I have the copies in hand to make a PDF of them. My printer has a sheet-fed scanner that can handle 8.5x11 (only) at 25 sheets at a time. It will also make a PDF of them if I want, although I'm not generally doing that because I can't clean the copies. The rub would be getting the copies produced in the first place. Frank, will I need to transmit my copy request auf Deutsch for ONB, or can I just submit an English request? It seems rude to just send one in English, but if they're OK with it then I am. Same with BNF - anyone know how best to approach them that achieves results? I've got rusty college French, German, and Italian that I can supplement into something understandable if not truly idiomatic.

Dear George,
Yes the Bizet book format is quite clumsy to scan (and this is indeed the reason why I did not scan it before sending to you! ;) ). Sorry for your scanner not working. Maybe you could just make photos. That's what I am prepared to do with my copies because I have also no other way to scan them properly. It is less satisfactory than proper scans but better than nothing.
Kind regards,
Jean-Séb

Hi Greg,

English is fine for Dr. Andrea Harrandt at ONB...all my communications with her have been in English and there has never been any offence taken at all. With the SBB, however, I do write them in German and receive answers in same. If you're familiar with Google, they have a free on-line translating software package that's not too hard to learn. You just paste in your letter and then hit the "translate" button to have it put into anything from Arabic to Turkish, etc. Since I am pretty familiar with German anyway, I can vouch for the program. It's not 100% of course, but still pretty incredible, requiring minimal effort in editing!

All Best,

I have a Mustek, but I do not consider myself a sufferer.

35,000 pages and still working like a dream.

Jean-Seb Bizet reworked and cleaned, although I couldn't rotate perfecltly every page, just the less "verticalized"

Thanks Caprotti! Other than a few near the beginning of the first file I don't really notice a lot of angled scans. A minor issue and they're certainly usable and nicely cleaned.
