Music that praises God

Post by biggemski2 »

Hello, dear musicians!

I would like to ask you everybody if you know some music for piano or other instruments as well that praises the Lord directly.
It is a subject for my bachelor thesis. Please note, I am not interested with "absolute" music with no refferences now.
Thank you very much for your kind replies!

Yours,
Martin

The obvious one of course is Messiaen Vingt Regards, the first piece being Regard du Pere, if i think of any others I will add them to this minimalist (so far) list.

Of course, most music of this sort uses voices. Without voices it is difficult finding anything much, but here at least is a snippet:
Beethoven Glory of God in Nature.pdf

One obvious place to start is the text "te deum laudamus" used by everybody from Berlioz to James MacMillan.

Then there are all the Magnificats

I had understood the quest to be for non-vocal, ie instrumental music. Funny you should mention James MacMillan though - there might well be something there - he's very obsessed with religion (I'm singing in his St John Passion in a few weeks' time).

Haydn's string quartet version of The Seven Last Words of Christ,
not to mention numerous organ works by Bach, Buxtehude et. al.
might fit the bill perhaps.

A late addition, if it helps!
Tournemire's magnificent 12 Preludes, op. 58 for piano: the ninth is a Meditation on God the father, and the final Prelude is Glorification of the Trinity.
Fabulous music, scandalously neglected (like so much else!)

Is the set of Tournemire available from the publisher? Is it scanned anywhere?
