this is possibly your most difficult quiz to date because of your use of Italian, English and maybe even French anagrams, though I am working on that one, so don't hold your breath.

You're right Brian, this is a very tough one, and I'd have struggled
even to get 8/10, had the boot been on the other foot.

Clues to the missing answers:-
6. Born 1945. Her nickname just isn't very complimentary, but it is
somewhat onomatopoeic.
8. 1861-1936. This madam's nickname is sometimes spelled (6,5,5)
rather than (5,5,5), with the addition of an 'e' at the end of the first
word.

I am still having difficulties with the anagrams but I assume No.8 is Ernestine Schumann-Heink, still have to work out the nickname though. All I can come up with is Madam(e) Shuma Hannk, is that it???

Brian, you're absolutely right with the singer's name, of course.
Her nickname appears to be something akin to a spoonerism,
namely Madam(e) Human Shank. My point of reference was one
of my books on opera, although a quick check on t'inernet didn't
produce any further references to it.

Thanks for the info Tim, I must say that the nickname is also a new one for me, I suppose most of the less than flattering nicknames will be withheld from the official records.
I still have no clue for the other lady "mens toujours" is all I can come up with.
I have one for you now, as I was searching for clues I came across a very well known singer of our generation from the pop world who is very proud of her nickname "Bathroom Betty" , got a clue who she is Tim??

Brian, the missing nickname refers to the black American soprano's just enormous
voice, I presume. Say it quickly and not very clearly, and the her nickname
sounds a bit like her real name. Hence the onomatopoeia.

The Conservative MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire has an almost
identical name.

I'm still thinking about who Bathroom Betty could be.

I must be getting slow in my old age, of course the answer is Jessye Norman and your anagram is "Just enormous", BUT I never heard her called that hence the difficulty. I always heard her called Jessye-Normous. That of course is always the problem when a nickname attracts variations. An excellent quiz Tim that really worked the grey matter to it's limit, I suppose after getting the first 8 so quickly my brain needed time to recharge it's batteries.
Glad you don't know who Bathroom Betty is, I'll give you another day or so then put you out of your misery. A clue... she got the name because she had her first singing job as resident singer in a Gay mens bathhouse in the USA.
