Some more by the great James P. - his gorgeous syncopated waltz "Eccentricity" and a folio of his boogie woogie solos (quite an oddity, as both he and Fats Waller were reputed to dislike the boogie style....)

More James P. Johnson solo material....a folio of his compositions transcribed from recordings by one Sam Meade (quite well done), and a very rare novelty piano solo from JPJ entitled "Jungle Nymphs." Played at tempo the "Jungle Nymphs" is a rather effective etude for fourths!

Years before Hoagy Carmichael went on to compose his song hits "Stardust," Rockin' Chair," "The Nearness Of You," and many others, he was composing novelty-ragtime tinged piano solos. In fact, his greatest hit "Stardust" actually started out as a piano solo sans lyrics.
Here is a folio which contains many of Carmichael's best novelty piano solos.

All Best,

On a similar novelty-tinged note, we have the unique music of Raymond Scott. Known as a band-leader during the 1930's through 1950's, his compositions are virtually all in a novelty piano vein. Much of Scott's music was used by Warner Bros. in the production of their cartoon series during the same period. Pieces like "Powerhouse" and "Dinner Music For A Pack Of Hungry Cannibals" will probably ring familiar to the ears of anyone who has watched the famous Warner Bros. cartoons. A rather unique branching-off of the novelty piano style. Enjoy!

All Best,

Frank

Further on Raymond Scott, here is a set of four novelties which were published by Victoria in England. They may well have been issued in the US as well, but I've never seen them.

Concluding this miniature treatise on Raymond Scott, there is a solo in a very "stride-like" style entitled "157 West 57th St.," rather unlike most of Scott's other compositions. Finishing the group is a folio of transcriptions done by Scott of popular songs. These may not suit everyone's taste, but certainly an active musical imagination can be seen in these arrangements. Enjoy them!

All Best,

Frank,

I have been trying to lay my hands on some Raymond Scott for ages (without success).
Thank you very very much indeed.

Regards,

Here is an important composition by the great Roy Bargy. It had been posted at one time and then retracted by the poster. Bargy is too important a composer in the novelty idiom to not have his complete published piano solos on Pianophilia. Enjoy
