I must confess that the Contradances are the only Mozart compositions that I never listen to, mainly because I can’t stand the circumstances surrounding it. At that time the only job the emperor would give him was to compose Contradances for the court dances. What a waste of his precious time! Tomorrow I’ll make an exception and play your transcriptions. My first introduction to WAM's contradances has a bit of a story attached to it.

Read on only if interested!

Back in about 1967, children's tv programmes started in the late afternoon.
Just prior to the start, ITV always played the same music with the test card.
I didn't know what it was, but it was delightful!

So I wrote to ITV asking them what it was. They wrote back to say that it
was a Decca LP of Mozart Marches and Dances conducted by Willi Boskovski.
Needless to say, I bought the LP.

One of the works on it was K.106, which is a mature work despite the low
Köchel number. Here it is in its original form, and my arrangement. Towards
the end, there's even a bit of B flat minor music, although WAM didn't actually
use that key signature, just accidentals.

A.E.Müller published 2 sets of 'Zwölf leichte Klavierstücke' by Mozart, in an early
Peters Edition. The first set included piano solo arrangements of operatic arias.
The second set included piano solo arrangements of movements from his early
string quartets. Amongst these were the inner two movements of WAM's early
D minor String Quartet, K.173. Unfortunately, AEM slightly 'müllered' some of
the original melodies in the process, presumably to make them more pianistic.

Attached is an arrangement of the whole string quartet, with all of the original
melodies left unaltered. The impressive chromatic fugal finale was a sign
perhaps that the 17-year-old composer was destined for greatness.

Btw, the same digits occur in both the Köchel number and the year of composition
i.e. 1773.

Time for me to eat humble pie! An eagle-eyed friend spotted two tiny
errors in my arrangement of K173, so here is the corrected version,
with a couple of other tweaks also included.

Apologies for the mistakes. Proof-reading is never a bad thing!
