Nice to see something different from Mereaux. Some of Mereaux's "60 Etudes" are enough to drive people to drink. I will never forget my encounter with Etude No.24 "Bravura" from that set which I regard as the worst etude ever written. Watch this performance and see why:

But this Sonata is quite a substantial work and I've been enjoying playing through it. I like the last movement of this Sonata, "A la douleur". Thanks for posting this rare work, Alfred.

yes, seconded - you may want to see also the Mereaux selection from the "Method of Methods" series ... not a bad piece ...

Thanks for this Alfor.
It was I, in fact, who requested this scan from the BNF as I had heard it was one of his best works.
Fleubis, it is true that Méreaux's Etudes are, for the most part, very academic, pedantic and uninspiring, but there are a few here and there that display something more.
As musiclife217 points out, number 13 is perhaps the strongest of the lot.

Thanks, 4candles for pointing out the Mereaux piece. That particular piece escaped my notice in that collection--which is a rather nice assemblage.

Actually, in my honest opinion I do believe all of these pieces that were selected by Katsaris are of some value, and number 13 is included.
Also, I think it's a very fine recording.

Katsaris did a wonderful job in picking the best pieces and his performances of these etudes is breathtaking--No.2 took my breath away.
Credit needs to be given to Mereaux for his notation which is really top drawer and makes his intentions crystal clear.

Coye's sonata is a substantial but disjointed beast of 5 movements. I agree, Alfred, in that it seems very much like an academic exercise. The 5th movement is an interesting rollick, though.
Thanks for sharing this, Alfred.
