Jean-Séb wrote:Antonin Marmontel (1850-1907) is the son of Antoine-François Marmontel.
Gosh! He was deeply anachronistic, in this case ... if this sonata was written in the 1870s, it predates early Debussy by only a decade and a half ... I thought 1830s ... even then, it is highly classical and diatonic ...

Jean-Séb wrote:Thank you dear Alfor.
Let us assume it is Antoine François but I must say the situation is quite confused as most of the scores are only identified by A. Marmontel which would also suit his son Antonin.
A bit confused indeed! I previously was only aware of Marmontel l'Ancien, the famous piano teacher at the
Conservatoire de Paris.
Dear isokani,
there are indeed a lot of academic composers who composed „retrogressive“ music.
Quite interesting in this context: the contemporaries of famous composer hardly ever were able to „catch up“ stilistically with these masters. I.e. many composers wrote „in a Brahmsian style“ even (only) 40 or 50 years after the composer's death. Or the other way round: Is there any contemporay of Liszt who tried to write a piece in the master's late style? One exception might be Mendelssohn and Schumann. You may find composers who already at the lifetime of these masters managed (although „with proper distance“) to write in the respective style.
