Thank you for feedback and the Cortot movie.
There are certain interesting aspects:
1) Cortot's playing - especially in the first piece - is a bit dry and with restricted emotions, imho, completely in the French tradition
2) The French definitely had their own brands of Grand Pianos (Pleyel, Erard, Gaveau) before the age of globalization!
3) The girl's world shown in the movie is quite different from what it is nowadays.
4) Nobody would dare today to speak of „Le terrible nègre" !!!!!
5) This movie received an award at the famous „Biennale de Venise“ !!!

Yes Alfred, Cortot is playing it full-on French tradition--and that is precisely what makes it so interesting. I was completely fascinated by "Gradus..." having never heard it played that way. It's nice to see the damper pedal not being mashed to floor when playing Debussy.
The movie is quite in keeping with it's historical context, and is quite remarkable, but it would surely have been banned in Mississippi (where I used to live). It has a new dimension for us to enjoy (which I've now safely archived before it gets "banned")

Thank you dear Alfred for Pour le Piano in a high class "glossy edition" with appropriate fingering.
For many of us here on this side of the pound, this was the first Debussy we learned--sure was in my case, and talk about a lead foot on the damper pedal. (I cringe thinking about how I played this some 50 years ago!).
We still have those mysterious asterisks still to consider---it just doesn't seem possible that they can be pedal indications. I already see some fingering improvements I can make in the Toccata, so this PWM edition is helping already.

This is apparently quite correct. Don't know why we have been so „narrow-eyed“ to overlock this most evident possibility!
