For each work to be studied in the piano class of Alfred ... Cortot, an „Analytical Essay“ had to be written by one of the students; here we have one by the Master himself .

Alfred, you have found a useful an valuable treasure for us. This looks to also be a very useful performing edition and is peppered with useful fingerings. Cortot's commentary is very insightful and am glad to see it is trilingual for us folks in the colonies with a language deficit.

There is also a Piano Concerto by Malats that no doubt someone will get around to recording in the not too distant future.

My initial impression would place it in the "fun" category.

Looked hard at those subtle changes in the Rach, Alfred, and they do make a diference.

I have made a "Salon Music" folder where I can put Malatas, Niemann and a few others which fall in this category--a nice place to go when you don't want to work hard (i.e., after Rach )

How wonderful that you've found the Brahms Sonata Op.5 Cortot Ed. for all of us to enjoy. Insightful commentary, though apparently not by Cortot but still good, and a well fingered edition by the master.

Just curious, how is it known that cortot is not the editor of the Brahms sonata?

I am quite sure that every word of the commentary has been written by Cortot himself!!

This is a late Cortot edition - first published in 1959. He refers to the Henle edition of the Brahms Sonatas, which was first published in 1956 (!), edited and fingered by Walter Georgii*.

*who provided some re-arrangement suggestions for tricky spots, which in later reprints have been ommitted!
