janterje wrote:I came across a rarity, which is doubly scandinavian: a transcription of Norwegian composer Halvorsen's "The Boyars' triumphal entry" done by Grieg.

It's not a previously known Grieg-transcription as far as I can tell. Not present in OT or in any other comprehensive lists I've seen. Printed in 1895, it should be quite safe with regards to copyright.

Enjoy - I like this piece very much, and it's an effective transcription even if it's not very virtuosic.

It would be great if this were a new discovery exclusive to this forum - but alas it has been recognised before, and it is included in Vol. 12 of the Naxos Grieg piano music CD series (played by Einar Steen-Nöckleberg)

Ah, I stand corrected. I didn't think to examine the Naxos recordings. Thanks for pointing it out. :)

Well, at least it has surfaced as a PDF to the collectors. Even though I just could have asked Einar for a copy years ago when I studied at the conservatory where he's a professor.

Not absolutely sure that I should put this up, as it's still listed in the Fazer ccatalogue, but the sheet music is just a photocopy of the 1919 copyrighted (presumably original and only ?) edition, so hopefully I'm not crossing any boundaries.
In any case this music, although no masterpiece (those would come in the extraordinary orchestral works of the 1920s), is too lovely, lush and pianistic to languish unheard and unplayed forever. It's early - pre 1920s - Aare Merikanto, and alas the second piece, Pan seems to have no obvious relationship with the great tone poem of the same name, but the quality of the six pieces are generally very high in my opinion, with Merikanto's usual marvellous sense of harmony and atmosphere, and would make a wonderful, and technically relatively easy, addition to the repertoire.

I'll place this question here, as this thread seemed closest. Does anyone know if this "Improvisation" by Cziffra, on Grieg's "In the hall of the mountain king", were ever written down, or published?
