Yes, they can!!!

"Light" music by soviet composers. Effective and a lot of fun! So-called "Estrade-music". Estrade concerts - meaning concerts with a mixed program of music from folksong to jazz pieces - have been (or still are??) immmensly popular in russia. Especially famous was the Moscow Estrade-Orchestra.

Dear Alfor, After perusing and downloading many of your superlative postings of Soviet piano works, I beg to further impose upon your generosity by asking about a specific work which I have attempted to locate for some time. The piece is by Theodore Akimenko; his Op. 44 "Sonate Fantastique" in three movements. I became aware of this wonderful work some time back via a midi website entitled something like "Russian Piano Midi House" (which now, after dedicated hunting appears to have disappeared). I would be happy to post the midi files of the three movements, but after attempting to do so found that the extension .mid is disallowed on the site. Any Pianophile members who would like to hear the Sonate can certainly contact me with their email and I will forward same.

As an afterthought, might it be possible to add midi file archival capabilities to the site? This is merely a suggestion, admittedly without any knowledge as to what copyright logistics might conflict and/or cause problems for the site. That would never be my intent. On some of the very technically difficult Soviet works, a sequenced file can be useful for study purposes. (Of course, a live recording is far superior!)

On the subject of midi files, I thought this version of "Sabre Dance" by Khachaturian would bring a smile to those fond of keyboard pyrotechnics. I have no information as to the transcriber, or sequencer for that matter. Cziffra certainly would seem a good possibility, but I believe his own published arrangement of this work is completely different.

Thank you Jean-Séb.....one thing I love about PP is you always learn something new

And fhimpsl - strangely I've recently ordered the Akimenko Op 44 sonata via Sibley library.....so wait to see what appears in the next few weeks. Much of the other Akimenko that was uploaded previously on the old site will eventually re-appear within our Archive which is currently being developed.

The Akimenko sonata seems to be quite rare - I could not detect it in a library within my reach. So I will gladly wait for Malcolm posting it.
