We would certainly be interested in your list, and it would be good to further our collection of Friedman's works in these fora (Alfor has scanned and uploaded some in the past). Rob (our erstwhile threadmaster) would probably want to create a specific Friedman thread under those circumstances.

A piano concerto was mentioned in an article, but there is no evidence of its existence. Also, three string quartets may have been written. Friedman’s many early compositional efforts were apparently destroyed by him after unfavorable comments . One wonders if the deficiencies were just from lack of academic training, or from use of Polish folk material not suited to conventional tastes.

Missing: songs and piano pieces
Publishers of some of these - Idzikowski (Kiev); T. Gieszczykiewicz (Cracow); and L. Zwolinski (Zakopane).

Allan's music (Sydney, Australia) had a Friedman album (their no. 1225) which includes all the arrangements they have published with the exception of the Bach choral prelude "Nun kommt..." .I have only a verbal statement to the effect that they had published a second version of this piece, but they have no knowledge of this now. Allan’s are now no longer publishing.

This is very interesting to me. I wonder if you have list of those Friedman pieces which have been recently recorded (i.e. still available, and on CD)? The reason I ask is that I have interested a company in recording a Friedman disc next year, and I want to include pieces that have not been commercially recorded.

I've heard some of this, and the bits I've heard were very uneven and home-made. The 2 piano suite, in which he "plays with himself", has some serious ensemble problems! Was only one volume of Valerie Tryon's series ever made?

This is what I have found to be available (mostly Tryon and Peter Froundjian) on CD:

Menuette from Le jugement de Paris.
Study on a theme by Paganini op.74b.
Tempo di menuetto (Concert transcription of 2nd mvt of Mahler's 3rd Symphony).
2 Childrens pieces from Bei den Marionetten.
Six Mazurkas op.85.
Firenze.
Music Box op.33 No.3.
Viennese Dance No.3.
Wiener Tanz No.6 Epilogue.
Frulingstimmen (after Johann Strauss).
Ballet des ombres heureuses (Gluck).
Les Fifres (Dandrieu).
Romance (Dalayrac).
Old English Minuet - The Countess of Westmoreland's Delight (Shield).
Fruhlingsstimmen (J Strauss II).
Passacaglia op.44.
Polish Lyrics Book 3 op.72.
Tabatiere a musique.
Ballade op.66.
Studies on a Theme of Paganini op47b (Friedman).

Can anyone expand this list?

About Gunnar Johansen's Friedman recordings: extensive, but certainly not complete, and, yes, the playing is uneven and home-recorded. Much of what he played he received from me. I never met him, but had phone conversations. As for his playing: he was indeed a fine musician and a great pianist, but somehow, I think, not temperamentally best suited for playing certain kinds of music! Years ago there were advertisements in NY for Levy's Jewish Rye, showing photos of various ethnicities happily eating this with the caption, "You don't have to be Jewish to love Levy's"! (No; a Scotsman in a kilt was not included!) While you do not have to be Jewish, Slavic, or Viennese to play idiomatic Friedman, or Johann Strauss transcriptions, though it does seem to help perhaps, Johansen in my humble opinion did lack something here.

I have not checked for any previous discussion, but are there any comments about Juliusz Zarebski (or, Zarembski)? I have some of his piano compositions, but have only just sight-read them through - quite interesting music!
