The Karg-Elert Sonata! Malc & Mr P have resurrected a real hidden treasure here, and I thank you. Have seeing his little character pieces, who'd have thought he could write something like this and wonderfully effective long-form sonata!
Karg-Elert wrote (?) 3 piano sonatas, though only two of them appear to exist. No.3 (which I also have) is available on IMSLP.
I put a question mark against this because I am not even sure that the 2nd sonata was ever written down. Maybe it is in manuscript somewhere. The 3rd, is a massive and very difficult work. There is a recording of both Sonatas on CPO 999 092-2 and four other discs of his piano music on there as well.
All the best, and thanks to you and other members for you thanks.
Sir Peter, I thank you for the info on Karg-Elert. I made a short retreat over to IMSLP to retrieve that 3rd Sonata and was quite surprised at the many innovative effects wrapped up in nice a cyclical form. The scale of both sonatas is a big surprise as this composer has much more depth than I ever expected. Am now in search of that recording you listed. Thank you again.
Many thanks to Malc and Mr.P for the sonata.
Don't forget the Op.67 sonatinas... it would be nice to have a clean scan of these if anyone has them.

Gustav Lange (1830 – 1889). German composer. He was born in Schwerstedt, near Erfurt, Prussian Saxony, in 1830. He produced a large number of works, most of which were salon pieces and several gained considerable popularity. The piano solos, Edelweiss (Op. 31), and Blumenlied (Op. 39), are perhaps two of his best known works today.
